Agartala: Dec 11: Healthcare workers at Unokoti District Hospital staged a protest on Wednesday in response to an incident involving the assault of Dr. Dhrupad Das on December 5th. According to the healthcare workers, Shyamal Das, the former deputy chairman of the Unokoti District Council and a current BJP-elected member, along with two others, entered the district hospital and misbehaved with Dr. Das while he was on duty. The situation escalated, leading to the assault of the doctor.
Following the incident, Dr. Das filed a complaint at Kailashahar police station, and the police registered the case. On December 6th, the police arrested Shyamal Das and the two others involved in the assault. However, later that day, all three attackers were released on bail by the court, which angered the healthcare workers.
Frustrated by the police’s handling of the case, the doctors at Unokoti District Hospital met with the Unokoti District Superintendent of Police on December 7th to express their dissatisfaction. They criticized the police for their lenient approach; argue that the attackers’ release was a result of weak action by law enforcement.
In response, healthcare workers at the hospital went on strike on Wednesday, demanding immediate and stronger action against those responsible for the assault. They warned that if no action is taken, they will launch a larger movement to address the growing concerns regarding the safety of doctors in Unokoti district.
