Agartala, November 5: In a significant development, the Sabroom police arrested five Bangladeshi citizens and three Indian nationals from the border village of Baishnavpur in South Tripura district. The arrests were made following an illegal border crossing from Bangladesh to India on Monday afternoon.
The eight individuals, including a child and two minors, were brought to the Sabroom police station for interrogation.
Among those arrested are three Indian nationals from Muhuripur village in Baikhora, South Tripura. The Bangladeshi nationals hail from Jagannath village, under Ramgarh police station, Khagrachari district, Bangladesh.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the arrested Indian citizens, Shambhu Pal (60) from Muhuripur, had arranged for his daughter’s marriage in Ramgarh, Bangladesh. On Monday morning, the group crossed the India-Bangladesh border near Ramgarh and entered Baishnavpur, Tripura.
On a tip-off the Sabroom police, led by Officer-in-Charge Apu Das, jointly with BSF acted swiftly and arrested the group from a rubber plantation in Baishnavpur.
The arrested individuals were brought to the Sabroom police station for further questioning. According to sources, they will be produced before the court today.
This incident has raised concerns regarding the rising infiltration of Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals since the political instability in Bangladesh following the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government.
Recently the Tripura government has urged the central authorities to expedite the completion of border fencing and replace the old, rusted barbed wire fence to prevent illegal crossings.
Earlier this year, Indian authorities, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), launched a nationwide crackdown on human trafficking networks, arresting around 45 touts involved in facilitating illegal border crossings.
These networks often help infiltrators enter India and find employment in major cities. Efforts are ongoing to curb this infiltration and strengthen border security across the region.
