Agartala, October 17: The opposition Congress has called for the resignation of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, accusing him of failing to maintain law and order in the state.
Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, on Thursday during a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Agartala, declared that the Chief Minister no longer has the moral right to hold office as both CM and Home Minister due to the rapid deterioration of public safety.
Asish Kumar Saha, a former MLA, highlighted the increasing rate of crimes in the state, specifically pointing to a surge in incidents such as crimes against women, communal violence, unnatural deaths, burglary, political violence, and extortion.
He claimed these issues have become an everyday occurrence, reflecting the complete failure of the Home Department under Chief Minister Manik Saha’s leadership.
“The Chief Minister has completely failed to safeguard the people of Tripura. The law and order situation has collapsed, and no one feels safe anymore,” said the Congress leader. He also expressed concern over what he termed a “conspiracy” aimed at inciting communal disharmony in the state, comparing the emerging situation to the communal strife witnessed in Manipur.
Saha provided details of several recent incidents of violence in the state, ranging from cases of rape, murder, and dacoity to arson and political attacks, particularly targeting opposition party supporters.
He claimed that these incidents have exponentially increased, further illustrating the Chief Minister’s failure to maintain peace and security in Tripura. He reiterated the Congress party’s demand for Manik Saha’s immediate resignation from both posts.
Additionally, Saha warned that if the state government fails to address these concerns, the Congress, following the conclusion of the ongoing festive celebrations, will initiate massive statewide protest agitations.
He mentioned that Congress leaders have already met with the Director General of Police (DGP) to raise these issues but indicated that little progress has been made.
Last month both opposition parties- Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] has separately demonstrated protest rally in Agartala against the alleged detrotating law and order situation in Tripura.
These demonstrations were primarily in response to what the opposition claimed was the ruling BJP’s complicity in political violence and the police’s inaction in curbing rising crime.
With allegations of communal tensions, escalating political violence, and a deteriorating sense of safety, Tripura’s opposition is preparing for further confrontations with the government, intensifying the political climate in the days ahead.
