In today’s assembly session, a significant uproar occurred following Minister Sudhanshu Das’ statement on Hindus posted on social media. The opposition made concerted efforts to challenge the Treasury bench and its ministers. Transport Minister Sushant Chowdhury clarified that neither the BJP nor the state government supports Das’ statement, emphasizing that the constitution grants everyone the right to express personal opinions.
Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath defended Das, explaining the context of his words and accusing the CPM of inciting riots in the state. Das, in his defense, accused Congress and CPM of being anti-Hindu, prompting the opposition to stage a protest in the well of the house.
Congress MLA Birjit Sinha criticized Das’ statement as unfortunate and demanded an apology, highlighting the distress it caused among the state’s populace. BJP MLA Abhishek Roy, supporting Das, stressed the need for caution given the situation in Bangladesh and warned against the rise of Jihadi forces.
Congress MLA Sudeep Roy Barman objected to Roy’s remarks, arguing that provocative statements are unacceptable from those sworn to uphold the Constitution. He noted that the controversial statement was later deleted but insisted that no minister should disrupt the state’s peace.
Despite the opposition’s pressure, Transport Minister Chowdhury reiterated that the BJP and state government do not endorse Das’ statement, which was deleted from social media. The opposition questioned the lack of action against Das for hate speech, contrasting it with the likely consequences for an ordinary citizen.
Agriculture Minister Nath defended Das further, accusing the CPM of wanting riots and clarifying the term “Jihadi” used in Das’ statement. The session concluded with heightened tensions and unresolved disputes.
