Agartala: Tinku Roy, Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education in Tripura, on Tuesday inaugurated the state-level programme marking International Women’s Day 2026 at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, education and self-reliance.
Addressing the gathering, Roy said women symbolize strength, courage and immense potential, and their progress directly contributes to the development of society and the nation. “The stronger the march of women, the more enriched and developed our society becomes. This day reminds us of the indispensable role women play in shaping our communities,” he said.
The minister emphasised that ensuring justice, rights and security for women and girls should remain a collective responsibility. He also highlighted the vital role of mothers in shaping the future generation. According to Roy, an educated mother nurtures an educated child, while a self-reliant mother inspires her children to become independent and responsible citizens.
Highlighting various welfare initiatives, Roy said both the central and state governments are implementing several schemes aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of women. He pointed to the growing number of women-led self-help groups and the rise of “Lakhpati Didis” in the state as signs of positive change.
During the programme, Roy virtually launched the pilot project “Nari Adalat” of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, which will initially be introduced in 10 Gram Panchayats of Tripura. He also virtually laid the foundation stone for a recreation centre for persons with disabilities at the Social Welfare and Social Education Department premises in Ujan Abhoynagar.
The event was attended by Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Women’s Commission, and Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Child Protection Commission, along with senior officials and women achievers.
Financial assistance under state schemes was also distributed, while Anganwadi workers and distinguished women from various departments were felicitated for their contributions.
