Agartala, March 5:
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Health portfolio, on Thursday said the state government is expanding advanced healthcare services so that patients no longer need to travel outside Tripura for specialized treatment.
The Chief Minister made the remarks after inaugurating several new facilities at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, including a Trauma Operation Theatre, a 16-bedded Geriatric and Respiratory ICU, and a Labour Room-cum-Obstetrics OT complex aimed at strengthening emergency and critical care services in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Saha said the government is working to introduce more super-specialty services such as liver transplant facilities in the future, while kidney transplant services have already begun in the state.
He said the goal is to ensure that people receive advanced treatment locally without facing the financial burden of travelling outside Tripura.
“The aim is that people should feel confident that quality treatment is available within the state itself,” he said.
Highlighting improvements in infrastructure, Saha said the newly established trauma centre at GBP Hospital will bring multiple emergency services—including CT scan, investigations, surgery and critical care—under one roof. Earlier, accident victims often had to be shifted between different departments, causing delays during emergencies.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the need to upgrade medical skills and said several doctors have already been sent abroad for specialized training, with more expected to follow as new medical technologies continue to emerge.
Saha further said the government is strengthening ICU capacity and critical care infrastructure across hospitals. At present, Tripura has around 24 NICU units and about 160 ICU beds, with plans to expand further.
He added that telemedicine services will also be strengthened to connect doctors in Tripura with specialists across the country and abroad, enabling patients to receive expert consultations without travelling long distances.
The government is simultaneously expanding healthcare facilities in district hospitals, establishing critical care blocks, and developing rehabilitation and specialty centres as part of a broader effort to build a robust and patient-centric healthcare system in the state.
“The government remains committed to strengthening both infrastructure and manpower so that the healthcare system becomes more efficient and accessible for everyone,” Saha said, reiterating the vision of a healthier Tripura.
