Agartala, February 22:The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha on Sunday evening staged a vehement protest in front of the Congress Bhavan in Agartala, raising slogans and burning the effigy of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi.
The demonstration was led by state Mahila Morcha president Mimi Majumder, a former MLA. The protest was organised in response to an alleged shirtless demonstration by members of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) during the India AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi two days ago.
Addressing media, Majumder alleged that the Youth Congress workers “tarnished the image of the nation” by staging what she described as a dramatic and shameful protest at an international forum attended by delegates from more than 100 countries.
She termed the act “anti-national” and claimed that those involved were linked to Rahul Gandhi and acted under his influence.
According to reports, some Youth Congress members allegedly walked shirtless inside the summit venue, holding T-shirts bearing slogans against the Central government and the India–US trade deal, before being removed by security personnel.
Hours after the disruption, BJP leaders claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s aide, Narsimha Yadav, had organised the demonstration and circulated an old photograph purportedly showing his association with the Congress leader.
During the Agartala protest, BJP Mahila Morcha activists shouted slogans against Rahul Gandhi and demanded a public apology, accusing the Congress of embarrassing the country on a global stage.
The effigy-burning was carried out amid tight security outside the Congress office, drawing attention from passersby in the busy area.
The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress in Tripura, with the ruling party targeting the Opposition over the controversial protest at the international summit.
