Acting on specific secret information, police conducted a raid and search operation near Bijoynagar bridge under Sonamura subdivision, leading to the recovery of a large consignment of dry ganja. During the operation, officials discovered 520 kilograms of dry ganja concealed at the location. The contraband was found unclaimed at the spot.
According to police sources, the raid was carried out swiftly following credible inputs about the presence of illegal narcotics in the area. Upon reaching the site, officers carried out a thorough search of the surroundings near the bridge and subsequently recovered multiple packets containing suspected ganja. After preliminary verification, the seized material was confirmed to be dry ganja.
As no individual came forward to claim ownership during the operation, the entire consignment was seized as unclaimed property. Police officials stated that all legal formalities were duly observed while confiscating the narcotics, including proper documentation and preparation of seizure lists in the presence of witnesses, as per established procedures.
The estimated black market value of the seized ganja is approximately Rs 1,04,00,000 (one crore four lakh rupees), indicating the significant scale of the smuggling attempt. Authorities suspect that the consignment was meant for illegal trafficking to other destinations, possibly outside the state.
Following the seizure, Sonamura Police Station has registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation to identify those involved in the smuggling operation. Efforts are underway to trace the source of the contraband and determine the intended destination. Police have intensified surveillance in the area and are exploring possible links to larger narcotics networks operating in the region.
