Agartala, January 31: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday described the growing drug menace as an “international conspiracy” aimed at destroying the youths of India and said the state government is countering the threat through sports, awareness campaigns, and expanded de-addiction facilities.
“Football is the game, drugs are a shame,” Saha said, underlining the government’s message as it promotes football tournaments and other sporting events to keep young people away from substance abuse.
The Chief Minister was speaking to reporters after virtually inaugurating a new English medium school at Belonia and a drug de-addiction centre hospital at Santirbazar.
He also attended the closing ceremony of the Tripura Nesha Mukt Premier League at Vidyapith Playground in Belonia, South Tripura district, in the presence of Cooperation and Tribal Welfare Minister Sukla Charan Noatia and other dignitaries.
Calling drugs a “psycho war” and an “international conspiracy,” Saha said efforts are being made globally to weaken India by targeting its younger generation, whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly described as the nation’s greatest strength.
“Our youths are the biggest resource of the country. Drugs are being used as a tool to destroy them. We must protect them at all costs,” he said.
Emphasising the role of sports in prevention, Saha said engaging young people in games and constructive activities naturally distances them from addiction.
“If a youth is involved in sports, he or she will stay away from drugs. Sports is one of the best ways to build discipline and a healthy lifestyle,” he added.
The government, the CM said, is focusing on both prevention and rehabilitation. While awareness drives are being intensified, treatment facilities are also being strengthened for those already affected. Several recovering individuals were felicitated during the programme as part of efforts to inspire others to seek help.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Saha said de-addiction centres will be set up in all eight districts of the state. On Saturday, the foundation stone for a new centre in South Tripura district was laid. So far, foundation stones for three districts have been laid, while construction of a major centre at Bishramganj in Sepahijala district is already underway at an estimated cost of ₹190 crore.
“Prevention is always better and cheaper, but if someone becomes addicted, proper treatment must be available. Our government is working on both,” he said.
Appreciating the football tournament organised under the Nesha Mukt Tripura campaign, the Chief Minister said such initiatives send a strong social message and will play a crucial role in achieving the vision of a drug-free Tripura and a drug-free India.
Earlier, in the day the Chief Minister also physically inaugurated an all-weather cricket practice ground at Belonia and virtually opened similar facilities at Jirania and Kailashahar. The grounds have been developed by the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA), with the Belonia facility set up at the Vidyapith Higher Secondary School ground.
