Agartala, January 5:
Panic and tension gripped areas on the outskirts of Agartala after a half-burnt body of a young woman was recovered from an isolated rubber plantation at Kalitila under Srinagar police station on Monday.
According to sources, a local youth who had gone to the plantation to collect firewood noticed unusual movement by a dog in the area. On approaching the spot, he discovered a partially burnt human body and immediately informed nearby residents, who alerted the police.
A team from Srinagar police station, led by Sub-Inspector Narayan Sen, rushed to the scene, which is located about one kilometre from the police station. A forensic team, dog squad and an executive magistrate were also deployed to assist in the investigation.
Officer-in-Charge of Srinagar police station, Inspector Arunadoy Das, said preliminary assessment suggests the deceased was a married woman aged between 25 and 30 years. He added that initial evidence indicates the woman may have been killed elsewhere and her body later dumped in the plantation and set on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
The identity of the victim is yet to be established, and no missing complaint matching the description has been reported so far. Additional SP (Urban) Dhruba Nath said investigations are ongoing and further details will emerge after the post-mortem examination.
