Agartala, December 25: At a time when communal tensions are rising across many parts of the world, the Ramakrishna Mission, Dhaleshwar, in Agartala on Wednesday evening observed Christmas Eve with devotion and grandeur, strongly underscoring the ideals of religious harmony, universal brotherhood and shared humanity.
The celebration saw the participation of hundreds of Hindu devotees and monks, reflecting the Mission’s long-standing tradition of honoring the teachings of great spiritual figures across faiths. The gathering reaffirmed the universal values of love, compassion, sacrifice and fraternity that transcend religious boundaries.
The programme commenced with the regular evening prayers, followed by a special worship dedicated to Lord Jesus Christ. The prayer hall was tastefully decorated with flowers, stars and Christmas trees, while a beautifully arranged altar displayed photographs of baby Jesus with Mother Mary and Lord Jesus, creating a serene and festive ambience.
As part of the observance, offerings of cakes, biscuits, chocolates and beverages were made, while Christmas carols echoed through the hall, spreading messages of peace, unity and goodwill. A monk performed a candle-lit aarti, accompanied by devotional songs and a brief discourse highlighting the spiritual significance of Christmas Eve as observed by the Ramakrishna Mission.
The celebration also paid tribute to the legacy of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, both of whom deeply revered the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, especially his ideals of sacrifice, selfless service and love for humanity. The tradition dates back to December 1886, when Swami Vivekananda and eight disciples meditated at Antpur in West Bengal on Christmas Eve, unknowingly taking vows of renunciation and service that later laid the foundation of the Ramakrishna Order.
Participants said the teachings of Jesus Christ continue to inspire humanity’s quest for peace and healing, particularly in times of conflict. The programme concluded with prayers for global peace and harmony, reaffirming the Ramakrishna Mission’s enduring commitment to promoting universal brotherhood and spiritual unity.
