The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Kamalnagar Nagar unit, on Monday raised serious concerns over the long-standing shortage of benches at Totabari High School in Khowai district and demanded immediate intervention from the education authorities. Highlighting the issue as a matter of basic student dignity and educational rights, the student organisation submitted a memorandum to the Kalyanpur School Inspector (IS), urging swift corrective action.
According to ABVP leaders, Totabari High School, located under the Kalyanpur block, has been facing the problem of inadequate seating arrangements for several years. Despite repeated appeals from the school administration and local residents, no concrete steps have been taken so far. As a result, a large number of students are forced to sit on the classroom floor during lessons, creating discomfort and negatively impacting their ability to concentrate and learn effectively.
The ABVP alleged that the persistent neglect by the concerned authorities reflects a lack of seriousness towards basic educational infrastructure. “Benches are not a luxury but a fundamental requirement for any school. Expecting students to attend classes while sitting on the floor is unacceptable and demoralising,” said ABVP representatives during the deputation. They added that such conditions undermine the quality of education and violate the basic standards expected in government-run educational institutions.
Several ABVP office bearers and student representatives were present during the submission of the memorandum. Those attending included Nagar unit secretary Himan Sarkar, SFD in-charge Ravi Sarkar, media in-charge Shanta Rudra Pal, along with Totabari school unit members Sabuj Sarkar, Hriday Sarkar, Biswajit Biswas, Anupam Biswas, and Uday Biswas, among other activists.
The ABVP delegation urged the education department and local administration to treat the issue with urgency and ensure the immediate supply of adequate benches to the school. They warned that if the problem continues to be ignored, the organisation may intensify its agitation in the interest of students. The student body reiterated its commitment to safeguarding educational rights and ensuring a conducive learning environment for all.
