Agartala, December 9:
In a sharp escalation of tensions between Tripura’s ruling NDA alliance partners, BJP Janajati Morcha leader and state general secretary Bipin Debbarma on Tuesday declared that the Tipra Motha Party’s “expiry date” in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is fixed — January 2026 — after which, he asserted, the BJP will take over the council.
Debbarma, speaking to reporters in the BJP headquarters in Agartala during a press conference claimed that the fear of losing power after January 2026 has pushed the junior NDA partner to “resort to violence,” alleging that the Motha has already lost its support base in the indigenous belts of the state.
Referring to the previous day’s reported vandalism and disturbances during a joining programme of BJP in Sepahijala district, Debbarma warned Motha supporters to refrain from violent acts. “BJP, the world’s largest party, will not tolerate such behaviour. We know how to repay bricks with stones,” he said.
He further remarked that even a national party like the Congress “could not stand against the BJP,” describing Tipra Motha as “a small party” with diminishing influence.
Debbarma cautioned those allegedly involved in the violence that the law would act firmly and “none will be spared.”
The BJP leader emphasized that the saffron party is working in a mission mode for development and communal harmony, claiming that people in tribal areas now see the BJP as the only trusted force.
He said that supporters from other parties — including Tipra Motha — are steadily joining the BJP in anticipation of a new political phase in the tribal council.
Debbarma reiterated that while the BJP and Motha share an understanding in the Assembly, no such alliance exists in the TTAADC. Whether the BJP will contest the upcoming district council elections alone or in alliance will be decided by the party’s top leadership, he added.
“But the people already know the outcome,” Debbarma declared. “The BJP will form the next TTAADC government — and Tipra Motha’s tenure ends in January 2026.”
