Agartala, December 7:
Tripura marked a historic milestone in its sporting journey on Sunday as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the GFI Bharat Golf Mahotsav at the Tusker BSF Golf Course in Salbagan, Agartala — the first-ever national-level golf event hosted in the state.
The tournament, jointly organised by the Tripura Golf Association and the BSF Golf Club, Agartala, signals a major leap for the state’s sports ecosystem. Calling it a proud moment for Tripura, Dr. Saha said the government would extend all possible support to develop golf infrastructure and promote the sport among youth, adding that golf also serves as an effective tool in the fight against drug addiction.
Highlighting the broader potential of the sport, the Chief Minister said the proposed development of a full-fledged golf course would significantly boost eco-tourism, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to realising the vision of a “Nasha Mukt Tripura.”
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, IG BSF (Tripura Frontier) Aloke Kumar Chakraborty, General Secretary of the Golf Federation of India (GFI) Ariyaveer Arya and president Tripura Golf Association Devid Debbarma, president, Tripura Golf Association.
Minister Tinku Roy, spoke on the massive sports infrastructure development across Tripura and various finance schemes for helping the budding sports talents of the state under CM Dr Manik Saha who himself has been a sports person. He also asserted that his department will also develop golf course in Tripura and especially Jampui Hills can be an idol place among others.
IG Chakraborty noted that Tripura’s natural landscape is ideally suited for golf and said cities with golf courses often experience rapid growth in the hospitality sector, transportation services, and even real estate prices. He added that luxury tourism linked to golf can also uplift the state’s indigenous handicraft sector.
Dr. Saha, accompanied by the IG, BSF and Minister Tinku Roy, took a tour of the vast golf course following the inauguration.
GFI General Secretary Arya informed that the Bharat Golf Mahotsav — part of the GFI Tour 2025 — began on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, and will conclude on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
