Agartala, December 1:
In a sharp escalation of tensions within the ruling alliance, BJP core committee member and former MP Rebati Tripura on Monday launched an all-out attack on Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, calling his One North East initiative a “desperate attempt to save political relevance” ahead of the 2026 TTAADC elections.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters—also attended by tribal leaders including MDC Bimal Kanti Chakma, BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma, and media in-charge Sunit Sarkar—Rebati said Pradyot was “talking big only because BJP is in power”, and accused him of playing with indigenous sentiments every time elections approached.
The former MP alleged that despite receiving huge funds from the centre and state, the Tipra Motha-run ADC had failed to deliver, maintained no financial discipline, avoided audits, and violated constitutional norms. “People want to know where the money went. Motha is afraid corruption will be exposed,” he said.
Taking a dig at Pradyot’s shifting political positions, Rebati said Tripraland disappeared from his dictionary, now Greater Tipraland is also gone, and after giving 22 Bengali candidates in 2023, he has returned to identity politics.
He said Pradyot’s fresh demand for a tribal Chief Minister in 2028 was only an emotional ploy, reminding that Tripura already had tribal CM in the past and all tribal run Motha led TTAADC that failed to deliver, but on the contrary under two non-tribal BJP CMs like Biplab Kumar Deb and Dr. Manik Saha witnessed significant improvement in the lives of indigenous communities.
The BJP senior tribal leader added that Pradyot’s own family benefitted enormously under BJP—his sister is a BJP MP, his grandfather Maharaja Bir Bikram was honoured nationally by PM Modi.
“He got power because of BJP, and now behaves as if he is the only voice of the Tiprasa,” Rebati remarked.
The BJP tribal leader accused Motha of misleading people and warned that Pradyot’s provocative remarks were attempts to disturb the peace achieved under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Rebati said under BJP rule, extremism ended, infrastructure improved, and Tripura gained national recognition, while the ADC under Motha failed to even conduct basic audits.
On the One North East campaign, he said Pradyot was “trying to create communal unrest and confusion” after losing ground.
MDC Bimal Kanti Chakma reinforced the attack, stating that the delay in implementing the 125th Constitutional Amendment was due to the tribal Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Mizoram not clearing provisions related to changes in PRI nominations, even though BJP governments in Tripura and Assam had already approved them.
Chakma said Pradyot himself knew this from attending the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting in Guwahati but continued misleading tribal people.
Rebati concluded that ahead of the 2026 ADC elections, Motha was reviving conspiracies and emotional slogans to cover up its non-performance. “Time will reveal who is conspiring with whom,” he said, asserting that the BJP would not allow anyone to disturb the state’s peace and unity.
