Agartala, November 26:
The countdown for the first public rally of the One North East platform has begun, with prominent political leaders from across the region arriving at Agartala’s MBB Airport on Wednesday. The mega rally, set to take place at the Astabal Ground, seeks to unify indigenous leadership across the Northeast under a common political and social agenda.
Among those who landed in Agartala today were Mmhonlumo Kikon, former Minister of Nagaland, and Hemochandra Singh, former Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Others, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, are also expected to join the event. Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who has played a key role in building the coalition, will be sharing the stage with the top regional leaders.
Speaking to reporters after their arrival, the leaders described One North East as a “long dream finally taking shape,” asserting that the platform will bring together the voices and movements of all Northeastern states, enabling them to stand as one on matters of shared concern.
They said that a united regional voice would make it easier to address longstanding issues which have often been overlooked or diluted.
The leaders highlighted pressing issues affecting the region, including land rights, dignity and preservation of identity, lapses in day-to-day governance, and the failure of various central and state schemes to reach their intended beneficiaries due to gaps between policymaking and implementation.
According to them, One North East aims to serve as a bridge between policy and implementation, ensuring that the benefits meant for the people of the region are actually delivered.
They further pointed out that several accords signed over the decades—including the Assam Accord, and more recently the Tiprasa Accord—have not been adequately implemented.
They stressed the need for collective regional pressure on New Delhi to ensure that such agreements are honoured in both letter and spirit.
The leaders conveyed a clear message: the Northeast is now preparing to negotiate with stronger unity and demand timely implementation of its rights and agreements. The rally, they said, will be the beginning of a new chapter in regional politics, a test for how New Delhi responds to a united Northeast and how One North East may reshape the political landscape of the region.
