Agartala, November 15: In a major crackdown against illegal narcotics cultivation, a joint team on Saturday destroyed more than 2.25 lakh marijuana plants grown illegally across 45 acres of forest land in the bordering Sonamura subdivision under Sepahijala district of Tripura.
According to Inspector Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura police station who led the operation, the raids were conducted from 7:30 AM to 1 PM in the Dhanirampur ADC area, where a total of 38 cannabis plantation plots were identified and razed. All the land belongs to the state Forest Department.
The large-scale operation involved a coordinated effort by multiple security and enforcement agencies, including Sonamura Police, 81 Battalion BSF (Deepak BOP, Dhanpur BOP, NC Nagar BOP, Batalab BOP, Matinagar BOP, Anandapur BOP), personnel from Sonamura and Boxanagar Forest ranges, 1st BN TSR, 11 BN TSR, 14 BN TSR (Women), 35 BN Assam Rifles (Agartala), and other sister units.
Inspector Das said the drive was aimed at curbing cross-border narcotics activities and dismantling the cultivation networks thriving in remote forested pockets of the border belt.
Authorities indicated that similar anti-narcotics operations will continue in the coming days to eliminate illegal drug cultivation in the region.
