Agartala, November 6:The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Thursday staged a sitting protest in Agartala, coming down heavily on both the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and in Tripura over what it termed as mounting corruption, unemployment, inflation, the spread of narcotics, and the alarming decline in law and order.
The demonstration, organized under the directives of the state Congress leadership, witnessed active participation from all wings of the party — including the Youth Congress, NSUI, Mahila Congress, and Seva Dal. Protesters raised several demands such as making Tripura a drug-free state, filling up all vacant government posts in schools and colleges, stopping outsourcing practices, ensuring women’s safety, passing the 125th Constitutional Amendment, granting Roman script for Kokborok, and curbing inflation.
Senior party figures, including Tripura Pradesh Congress president and former MLA Asish Kumar Saha, MLAs Sudip Roy Barman, Tribal Congress chief Sabda Kumar Jamatia, Youth Congress state president Neel Kamal Saha, Mahila Congress president Sarbani Ghosh, and youth leader Amir Hussain led the agitation.
They announced that similar statewide protests are going on across the state to build pressure on the government.
Addressing the gathering, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman launched a fierce attack on the BJP and the RSS, accusing them of distorting India’s history and continuing a divisive political agenda.
“The BJP is reviving the old divide-and-rule tactics to distract people from real issues. India is going through its worst phase since Independence — the economy has collapsed, unemployment is soaring, corruption has become institutionalized, and democratic rights are being suppressed,” said Roy Barman.
He further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are working primarily to serve corporate giants Ambani and Adani, “robbing the common man while putting national interests and foreign policy at risk.”
Roy Barman also appealed to CPI(M) and BJP supporters to join hands with the Congress to “save Tripura and the nation from total collapse.”
Tripura Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, in his address, accused the BJP government of turning Tripura into a “drug-infested and corruption-driven state,” claiming that law enforcement agencies are unable to act against criminals because many are politically protected.
“Increasing crimes against women, rising unemployment, poor education and healthcare have become major concerns. Congress will continue its fight and intensify statewide agitations to hold the government accountable and restore public trust,” Saha asserted.
The protest concluded with Congress leaders reaffirming their commitment to sustain the movement across Tripura until the state and central governments address the mounting economic and social crises that have, they claimed, pushed the state into deep distress.
