Agartala, Sep 24 — Police on Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with the September 21 Hezamara incident, where a BJP leader and a journalist were brutally attacked by Tipra Motha-backed miscreants. The accused were identified as Sushanta Debbarma and Shailendra Debbarma, a police officer confirmed.
The attack took place ahead of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) programme, leaving Janajati Morcha state vice-president Mangal Debbarma and journalist Kamalkanti Tripura seriously injured. The victims were rushed to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for treatment.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who visited the injured at the hospital on Wednesday, strongly condemned the violence. “Our government will not tolerate such attacks. Those involved in this condemnable incident must be brought to justice,” he said. Dr. Saha also interacted with doctors to ensure proper medical care for the victims.
Later, while addressing editors and senior media persons in Agartala, the Chief Minister confirmed the arrests and revealed that another individual had been arrested in connection with the vandalism at the BJP Mandal office in Mandwi on Tuesday night.
The Chief Minister emphasized that although Tipra Motha is an alliance partner, BJP will not remain silent against violence. “Law will take its own course. We do not believe in politics of physical assault. BJP stands for peace, and people will not accept such incidents,” he asserted. He further alleged that a conspiracy was underway to create unrest in the state.
Meanwhile, journalists staged a road blockade at Hezamara demanding swift justice and the arrest of all culprits involved in the assault on their colleague.
The incident has triggered political tension in the region, with the government assuring strict measures to prevent recurrence of such attacks.
