Agartala, September 4: A video showing a man displaying several bundles of big currency notes inside a car while speaking in Kokborok has gone viral on social media, triggering a fresh political controversy in Tripura.
The man has been identified as Raju Jamatia, reportedly a close associate of BJP Bagma constituency Mandal president Amar Jamatia in Gomati district of Tripura.
Opposition parties have seized on the video, circulating photos of Raju Jamatia with several BJP leaders and alleging that the money is the result of “massive corruption” involving ruling party leaders.
However, Raju Jamatia has denied the allegations in a separate video statement. He clarified that the viral clip and photos are old, dating back to 2019, and claimed the money shown was related to his loan and business activities.
He further asserted that he holds no position in the BJP and has no official links with the Mandal president. According to him, the resurfacing of the video is a deliberate attempt to defame him.
The controversy has revived memories of a similar incident during the Left Front regime, when a CPIM party worker in Agartala was photographed lying on a bed covered with bundles of currency notes—a case that made national and even international headlines.
With political rivals trading charges, the latest viral video has added to the ongoing debate over corruption in Tripura’s political landscape.
