Agartala, August 7: In a major breakthrough in Tripura’s anti-narcotics drive, the Bishalgarh police on Thursday afternoon seized a vehicle loaded with 98 kilograms of dry cannabis (ganja) near Sukanta Colony in Gokulnagar under Sepahijala district, located close to the India-Bangladesh border.
Acting on a tip-off, police personnel from Bishalgarh Police Station launched a raid in the Sukanta Colony area, where they intercepted a Maruti vehicle suspected to be transporting a large consignment of cannabis. Sensing the police presence, the traffickers fled the spot, leaving the vehicle and the contraband behind.
The operation was led by Officer-in-Charge Vijay Das and his team, who acted swiftly on the intelligence input.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the cannabis was being transported from Agartala towards the border with Bangladesh, likely for cross-border smuggling.
Senior police officials, including DCM Prosenjit Das, later reached the spot and oversaw the weighing and seizure of the narcotics.
The vehicle, along with the entire consignment, was brought to the Bishalgarh Police Station for further legal proceedings.
A manhunt is underway to trace the absconding driver and others involved in the smuggling racket.
Authorities are also investigating possible links to larger interstate and international drug networks.
