Agartala, August 7:
A violent clash erupted in Hira Chhara ADC Village under Kailashahar subdivision of Tripura’s Unakoti district on Wednesday night, reportedly over the alleged slaughter and consumption of dog meat. At least seven people, including one woman, were seriously injured in the incident.
The conflict stems from an earlier allegation that three youths from Ward No. 1 stole and slaughtered a pet dog. Following a complaint by the dog’s owner, Rajaram Nuniya Munda, police registered a case and arrested two of the accused. One of the alleged offenders, identified as Pintu Das, remains absconding.
Tensions escalated when a group allegedly led by Pintu Das’s relatives attacked Rajaram’s house. In the ensuing violence, both sides reportedly clashed, leaving several injured. Among the injured are Rajaram, his wife Surji Gaur, Golap Chasa, Budhan Chasa, Sultan Ali, Chandan Das, and Soma Bauri.
Police from Irani Police Station responded swiftly, transporting the injured to Unakoti District Hospital. Chandan Das, who suffered a severe eye injury, was later referred to Agartala for advanced treatment. Surji Gaur and Sultan Ali remain hospitalized, while the others were discharged after treatment.
Authorities confirmed that some of the injured, including Chandan Das and Soma Bauri, are relatives of the absconding accused, indicating that the violence was retaliatory.
Kailashahar SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, along with forces from Irani and Kailashahar police stations, visited the area. Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have been deployed to maintain peace, and regular patrols are ongoing.
While no new complaints have been filed, police are monitoring the situation closely. Meanwhile, local animal rights group “Go Green and Help Stray Animals” has condemned the dog killing and demanded strict action. An investigation is underway.
