Agartala, July 30:A three-member enquiry committee constituted by the Directorate of Secondary Education, Tripura, visited Barpathari in the Belonia subdivision of South Tripura district on Wednesday to investigate the tragic suicide of a Class 10 student, Trisha Majumder. The minor girl allegedly ended her life after reportedly being insulted by a teacher at her school over confusion in her answer script.
The enquiry team—comprising Lisa Bardhan, Joint Director of Elementary Education; Kajal Kumar Bhowmik, OSD at the Directorate of Secondary Education; and Sudip Sarkar, OSD in the office of the District Education Officer, West—met with the accused teacher of Sonarpur Class XII School and also spoke to the grieving family of the deceased. The visit coincided with the performance of Trisha’s Shraddh or last rites at her residence.
The probe panel was constituted under the supervision of the Director of Secondary Education, following a directive issued by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who had earlier expressed deep concern over the incident and promised appropriate action.
Lisa Bardhan, leading the committee, told reporters, “We are conducting a detailed investigation to unearth the facts surrounding this deeply saddening incident. We are speaking to all individuals connected to the case, and a comprehensive report will be submitted to the higher authorities soon.”
Initial findings suggest that the student may have taken the extreme step after allegedly being reprimanded by a teacher in front of classmates, which could have caused emotional trauma.
The committee is expected to complete its investigation and submit the final report by Thursday.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage and sorrow in the region, prompting calls from several quarters for stricter accountability in schools and better mental health support systems for students.
