Agartala, July 21: A horrifying machete attack rocked Shalbagan under Agartala’s Airport Police Station limits on Sunday night, leaving four people injured, one of them critically. The incident occurred around 9 PM, when two individuals—Mona Debnath alias Mona Don and Khokan Das—allegedly attacked Bapan Debnath and Sandip Mukherjee with sharp weapons.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers attempted to flee after the brutal assault but were caught and thrashed by local residents. Police, along with the fire and emergency services, rushed to the scene and rescued both the victims and the accused. All four were taken to GBP Hospital for treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that one of the victims sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear. However, preliminary reports suggest that an old rivalry may have triggered the violence.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mondal confirmed that an investigation is underway and the situation is currently under control. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further disturbances.
Local sources revealed that Khokan Das has a history of criminal activity. He had previously served jail time for allegedly attacking his own brother and sister-in-law with a machete.
The incident has sparked tension in the locality, but officials have assured that the situation remains calm. Authorities are maintaining strict vigilance in the area to ensure that no further untoward incidents occur.
This shocking incident has once again raised questions about safety and recurring violence in suburban areas of the city. Police are expected to make arrests and file charges after preliminary medical and forensic assessments are complete.
