Agartala, July 16: In a major breakthrough in the state’s anti-narcotics drive, Mungiakami police under Khowai district of Tripura on Wednesday seized a massive consignment of one lakh banned Yaba tablets—worth an estimated Rs 10 crore in the international grey market—and arrested two drug traffickers.
The seizure comes just two days after the same police station intercepted a cannabis consignment worth Rs 50 lakh, signalling an intensifying crackdown on drug trafficking in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pannalal Sen said that during routine vehicle checking at a naka point, a team led by Sub-Inspector Tansajai Reang stopped an autorickshaw (registration number TR 01 M 3624) coming from the Ambassa side. Suspicious about a strong medicinal smell emanating from the vehicle, the police conducted a thorough inspection.
An Executive Magistrate, Sanib Debbarma (DCM of Teliamura), was called to the spot along with two independent witnesses. Upon inspection, the police recovered ten cartons hidden beneath the driver’s seat. Each carton contained five boxes, and each box had ten packets—each packet filled with 200 blue-colored Yaba tablets. In total, one lakh tablets, weighing 10 kilograms, were seized.
The autorickshaw driver Bikas Deb and his accomplice Suman Majumder have been detained and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act said SDPO Sen.
The tablets—believed to have originated from Myanmar—are a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, highly addictive and commonly trafficked across the Indo-Myanmar border.
A forensic team has been deployed to examine and seal the recovered contraband, and the accused are being prepared to be produced before the court after preliminary interrogation.
