Agartala, June 27:
In a significant development amid growing demands from BJP’s tribal alliance partners for stricter action against illegal immigrants in Tripura, police on Friday arrested two Bangladeshi women and an Indian tout in Agartala for illegally crossing the international border.
Rana Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station, confirmed the arrests and stated that the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of suspected Bangladeshi nationals near the North Gate area of the city.
A mobile patrolling team, led by Sub-Inspectors Kamala Murasingh and Sameresh Chakma, detained the two women along with the tout who allegedly facilitated their entry into Tripura.
The arrested Bangladeshi nationals—Ruma Sheikh from Narayanganj and Aklima Aktar from Sunamganj—failed to produce any valid travel documents and were booked under the Foreigners Act. The tout, identified as Krishna Debnath from Natunbazar in South Tripura district, was charged for abetting their illegal entry into India.
Inspector Chatterjee added that all three accused will be produced before the court with a request for police remand to facilitate further interrogation and uncover more details regarding the infiltration network.
The arrests come at a time when TIPRA Motha and IPFT, both tribal allies of the ruling BJP, have intensified pressure on the state government to take tougher measures in response to a recent Union Home Ministry directive concerning the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants—an issue viewed as a national security concern.
