Agartala, June 22: Tripura is set to achieve a major milestone in its educational journey as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will formally declare the state as “fully literate” on Monday, June 24. This achievement places Tripura as the third state in India, after Mizoram and Goa, to receive this distinction.
The declaration will take place at a special event in Agartala, which will be attended by senior officials from the Union Ministry of Education and other dignitaries. According to an Education Department official, the accomplishment is a result of the successful implementation of the centrally sponsored *ULLAS – New India Literacy Programme* (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society), aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.
As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24, Tripura’s literacy rate stood at 93.7%. Following the latest push through the ULLAS campaign, the figure has now risen to 95.6%, crossing the 95% threshold required to be declared “fully literate.”
Tripura’s literacy journey has been long and challenging. From a mere 20.24% literacy rate in 1961, the state had already climbed to 87.22% by the 2011 Census. This latest success came through a coordinated effort involving the School Education Department, State Literacy Mission Authority, SCERT, students, retired teachers, and over 2,200 volunteer educators.
Literacy materials were made available in Bengali, English, and Kokborok, with instruction extending even to hill markets and courtyards. The current literacy model also emphasizes functional skills, including financial literacy, digital transactions, and basic arithmetic.
Officials say this recognition not only marks a historic moment for Tripura but also sets a powerful example for other states to follow in the journey toward universal literacy.
