Agartala: May 20: The Government of Tripura has approved a 16% increase in the daily wages of tea garden workers, marking the first hike since 2018. With this revision, adult workers’ wages have gone up from ₹176 to ₹204, while wages for minor workers have been raised from ₹88 to ₹102. The announcement was made by Minister Tinku Roy during a press conference on Thursday.
Minister Roy highlighted that the last wage revision took place in January 2018, when adult wages rose from ₹105 to ₹176, and those of minor workers increased from ₹52.50 to ₹88.
In response to renewed demands for a wage hike from tea garden workers, the state government had formed a 10-member committee earlier this year. The committee, chaired by MLA Swapna Das Paul from the 46-Surma Assembly Constituency, was tasked with reviewing all aspects of the wage structure and recommending appropriate revisions.
As part of its mandate, the committee also reviewed various job categories under the minimum wage framework in the tea industry. A discussion meeting was held on 28 May, chaired by Swapna Das Paul, with participation from key stakeholders including Sameer Ranjan Ghosh (Chairman, Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd), Sanjay Bagchi (Secretary, Indian Tea Association – Surma Valley Branch), and Jaydeb Sarkar (President, K.K. Nagar T.S.S.S. Ltd).
After evaluating all relevant factors, the committee proposed a 16% wage hike, which the state government subsequently approved. Minister Roy confirmed the decision and emphasized that the move reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of tea garden workers and improving their living standards.
