In a heart-wrenching incident, three teenage boys drowned while bathing in a pond located within the Agriculture Department premises at Matripalli area of Badharghat in Agartala on Tuesday.
According to Bijoy Debnath, officer incharge of the AD Nagar police outpost who reached the spot said that the deceased were identified as Boby Sukla Das, Subham Deb, and Suvajit Dey—were all aged between 15 and 16 years and residents of the local area.
The tragedy unfolded when the trio had reportedly entered the pond for a swim, unaware of its depth.
Local residents, upon noticing the incident, managed to recover one of the boys and immediately rushed him to the TMC hospital in an ambulance.
Unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival.
In the meantime, a team of firefighters and police personnel from AD Nagar police outpost reached the site and launched a search operation. The remaining two bodies were recovered within 15 minutes.
“The pond is quite deep, and though the rescue efforts were swift, all three boys had already succumbed by the time they were found,” said Debu Datta, a fireman who led the recovery operation.
An investigation is underway to uncover the actual reason behind the deaths.
The tragic event has cast a pall of gloom over the locality, with mourning families and shocked residents demanding safety measures in and around such unguarded water bodies.
