Agartala, June 12: The ruling BJP’s ally Tipra Motha Party on Thursday intensified its demand for the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants in Tripura by organizing a protest rally in Jirania subdivision of West Tripura district.
The party alleged that the state government has failed to act on the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) recent directive and warned of massive agitation if the issue remains unaddressed.
The protest rally was led by Tipra Motha MLAs, senior leaders, and an Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
After the rally, a memorandum was submitted to Jirania BDO Shanti Ranjan Chamkma for onward submission to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
Addressing the media, Motha MLA Biswajit Kaloi criticized the BJP-led state government for inaction, stating, “BJP-ruled states like Rajasthan and even neighbouring Assam have taken visible steps to identify and deport illegal immigrants. But here in Tripura, which shares a long and porous border and has suffered major demographic changes, no significant move has been made.”
He further alleged that the international border remains vulnerable, and infiltration continues unabated. The party has demanded the formation of a special task force and CCTV surveillance in the border to curb infiltration and ensure prompt deportation of illegal immigrants.
The MHA, on May 19, directed all state governments and Union Territories to initiate the process of identifying and deporting illegal immigrants within 30 days. However, Tipra Motha claims the Tripura government is yet to take visible steps in that direction.
“If the government fails to take appropriate action soon, Tipra Motha will launch a state-wide agitation,” warned Kaloi.
