Agartala, June 7:
High tension prevailed in Tripura’s Udaipur subdivision on Saturday following two separate incidents of cow slaughter during Eid-ul-Zuha, which sparked outrage among locals and led to heavy police deployment to prevent communal clashes.
The first incident occurred near the Gomati riverbank in Chanban under the Gomati Para area, where a cow was allegedly slaughtered in public, flouting government regulations.
Members of the Hindu Jagaran Manch — affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh — reportedly witnessed the act and raised an alarm, leading to protests and widespread anger among sections of the local Hindu population.
The situation escalated rapidly, prompting the immediate intervention of senior police officials.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Kulwant Singh, Udaipur SDPO Nirman Das, and a large contingent of Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) rushed to the scene to control the situation. Their timely response helped prevent clashes.
SDPO Nirman Das confirmed that on Eid celebration there was huge deployment across Udaipur subdivision to prevent cattle slaughter in public but in Chanban area close to the river in the back of a house a cattle was slaughtered which to out notice so we have detained them and in connection with the illegal slaughter, and legal proceedings are underway.
Four persons have been arrested in connection to the incident and the cow’s carcass was buried following administrative protocol to avoid further unrest.
In a related incident, communal tensions also flared in the Rajnagar area, close to the historic Bhuvaneswari Temple, after another case of cow slaughter came to light.
Locals protested strongly, and reports emerged of damage to a few houses during a heated confrontation between members of two communities.
The police responded swiftly once again, with SP Kulwant Singh, SDPO Nirman Das, and 5th TSR Battalion Commandant Jyotishman Das Chowdhury arriving at the spot with additional forces to restore order.
Police found that in this case the slaughter had taken place in a closed area inside a house.
Though no further violence was reported, both areas remain under heightened security, with continuous patrolling by police and paramilitary forces.
Authorities have issued strict warnings against taking the law into one’s own hands and have urged citizens not to spread or react to rumors.
Police have launched full investigations into both incidents and have appealed for calm and communal harmony during the sensitive festive period.
