Agartala, June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) held an awareness campaign at Post Office Chowmuhani in Agartala, urging both the public and government to take urgent, meaningful action to combat environmental degradation.
Senior party leaders, including TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha, Congress MLA and CWC permanent invitee Sudip Roy Barman, and former TPCC president Pijush Kanti Biswas, led the initiative. Holding placards, they demanded stricter enforcement against single-use plastic and other environmental hazards.
Addressing the media, Sudip Roy Barman reaffirmed the Congress party’s longstanding advocacy for banning single-use plastics in Tripura. He criticized the government’s inconsistent approach, noting that although plastic bans were initially enforced in Agartala markets, these efforts have now largely stopped.
Roy Barman raised serious concerns over the unchecked use of plastic packaging for essential goods such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat, along with the growing dependence on bottled water. He pointed out that improper disposal practices — particularly the careless dumping of plastic bottles — contribute significantly to clogged drainage systems and frequent urban flooding, even with minimal rainfall.
He also condemned the widespread use of plastic-based flex banners and festoons for political promotions, alleging that some ruling party leaders are profiting from their production, thus worsening the plastic crisis.
Calling for more than token gestures like ceremonial tree planting, Roy Barman demanded that the government implement firm, long-term environmental policies. He also urged citizens to actively participate in protecting the environment, emphasizing that sustainable change is only possible with collective effort.
The Congress party’s initiative marks a call to action, pushing for accountability and genuine commitment to environmental preservation in Tripura.
