Agartala, June 3: A shocking incident in Tripura’s Kailashahar subdivision under Unakoti district of Tripura has triggered widespread tension after a youth was allegedly beaten to death by angry villagers following a reckless road accident. The incident took place at Kalishashan Tea Estate in Kailashahar.
According to eyewitnesses, a speeding Maruti Alto car struck a tea garden worker, severely injuring him, before veering off the road and falling into a concrete roadside drain. As the vehicle crashed, the driver and the other occupants quickly fled into the adjacent tea estate to hide.
Enraged by the accident, villagers began searching the garden and eventually found the driver.
In a brutal act of mob justice, they allegedly beat him mercilessly, leaving his lifeless body inside the tea estate before dispersing.
The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Das, a resident of Ratiabari area under Kumarghat.
Meanwhile, the injured tea garden worker, identified as Logen Urang, suffered a broken leg due to the collision. Furious locals later set the Alto car on fire. Firefighters from Kailashahar rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.
District authorities, including Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R., Additional SP L. Vanglima Darlong, SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, and Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar police station Sukanta Sen Choudhury, reached the scene with a large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel to control the situation.
Meanwhile, forensic team has started an investigation and the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem.
While police were identifying the body of the deceased driver, another youth who had been inside the car, Nirmal Das, suddenly emerged from the tea estate’s jungle and surrendered to the authorities.
He was taken to Kailashahar police station for questioning. Nirmal is a resident of Pecharthal Bazar area.
Reportedly Nirmal told police that there were three people in the car. The vehicle was owned and driven by Pradeep Das, while Nirmal sat next to him. Another passenger, Dipen Debnath, was seated in the back. Dipen is reportedly a resident of Kumarghat.
However, police is yet to officially speak regarding the incident
The gruesome incident has left the entire Kailashahar subdivision in a state of unrest as police continue their investigation into the mob violence and fatal assault.
