Agartala: June 03: Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, raising serious allegations of corruption and irregularities in the recruitment process at Tripura University. In his letter, Barman has called for the immediate removal of Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain and Registrar Dr. Deepak Sharma, along with the formation of an independent, high-level committee to investigate all recruitment and financial transactions over the past year.
He wrote, “The proud legacy of Tripura University is now overshadowed by corruption. The Vice-Chancellor and Registrar have turned the university’s administration into a hub of nepotism, corruption, and unethical practices. Merit and competence have been replaced by favoritism.”
Barman pointed out that although a new Vice-Chancellor recruitment notification has already been issued and the current VC’s executive powers legally revoked, Professor Prasain and Dr. Sharma have scheduled interviews for faculty posts in Sociology, Sanskrit, and Law departments on June 8 and 9 — actions he calls completely unauthorized.
He alleged large-scale irregularities in both teaching and non-teaching appointments, where local qualified candidates were ignored in favor of less qualified candidates from outside the state. He also accused the VC of appointing his own son as an engineer at the university, calling it a blatant act of nepotism.
Local media have published multiple reports on the issue, and a police case has been filed. Barman also claimed that recommendations from top RSS and BJP leaders influenced these controversial recruitments.
He urged the Education Minister to immediately dismiss the VC and Registrar and initiate a thorough investigation into all recruitment, contracts, and major purchases made in the past year. Barman warned that failure to act promptly will further erode public trust in the university and questioned the silence of the state government amid such serious allegations.
