Agartala: May 23: Tripura is set to enhance its railway connectivity with a new express train service between Agartala and Guwahati (Narangi), following a proposal by West Tripura MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The approval from the central government came less than a month after Deb met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on April 22, where he strongly advocated for improved railway infrastructure and services in the state.
Among Deb’s key demands was the introduction of a new express train to improve travel convenience between Agartala and Guwahati—a crucial route for the Northeast region. The Railway Minister responded promptly, conveying the official approval through a formal letter. Deb expressed gratitude for the swift response and reaffirmed his commitment to better connectivity for Tripura.
During the April 22 meeting, discussions also included long-term development plans such as railway modernization, the introduction of new services in Agartala, double-lane expansion, and broader infrastructure upgrades. These proposals, aimed at transforming the state’s rail network, are currently under active consideration by the Railway Ministry.
Deb has been instrumental in strengthening Tripura’s railway connectivity since his tenure as Chief Minister, during which several express trains were introduced. The newly approved train service is expected to significantly boost passenger comfort and regional connectivity in the Northeast, especially between Tripura and Assam.
This development underscores the growing focus on integrating the Northeast with the rest of the country through modern and efficient transportation systems. With enhanced connectivity, the new train will not only ease travel for daily commuters but also benefit the economy by promoting tourism and trade across state borders.
