Agartala, May 20: Barely a year and a half since its inauguration, the legislator hostel built under Tripura’s General Administration Department is already showing serious signs of deterioration. Cracks have appeared on the roof, leading to water leakage, while doors and windows are reportedly in poor condition. The matter has drawn public attention after ruling party legislator Pramod Riyan, representing Santirbazar, publicly questioned the quality of construction.
Speaking to journalists, Riyan expressed deep concern over the hostel’s condition. “If this is the state of the hostel just a year and a half after construction, it will become uninhabitable in the near future,” he said. “The roof is already cracked, water leaks during rain, and the doors and windows are falling apart. The construction quality is shockingly poor.”
He also remarked that if a project meant for legislators is handled so carelessly, it raises serious concerns about the condition of infrastructure in other government departments. Riyan has called for accountability, questioning the roles of both the contractor and the engineering wing of the General Administration Department responsible for the project.
Despite growing criticism, the administration has yet to issue an official response. However, with a legislator from the ruling party raising concerns, the issue has sparked widespread demands for a thorough investigation.
Civic groups and members of the public are demanding immediate renovation of the hostel and action against those responsible for the substandard work. As the building was constructed with taxpayers’ money, the public outrage is intensifying, with many calling it a blatant misuse of funds.
The incident has triggered a broader debate about transparency and accountability in public construction projects across the state.
