Tripura is facing frequent and severe power disruptions, not due to technical failures or natural calamities, but as part of a deliberate act of sabotage, according to Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. Speaking to the media, he stated that organized groups are intentionally damaging power infrastructure, causing hardship for citizens across Agartala and other areas.
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation has filed a formal complaint at the East Agartala Police Station, and initial investigations indicate targeted tampering. On Monday night, 21 transformers across key localities in Agartala—including Dhaleshwar, Chandrapur, Shibnagar, and Kamarpukur Para—were found to be sabotaged. In some areas, transformer gangs and cutouts were removed, while in others, heavy objects were thrown onto power lines to trigger short circuits.
CCTV footage from Kamarpukur Para captured a suspect on a scooter deliberately disabling a transformer, plunging the area into darkness. These incidents have prompted an FIR and a full-scale investigation, with cooperation from the IT department and police.
Minister Nath assured that Tripura has no electricity shortage, and power outages caused by weather or maintenance are always pre-announced. He alleged that these recent disruptions aim to facilitate criminal activities under the cover of darkness.
He urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity near electrical equipment to the authorities. The state government, he said, is committed to strict legal action against the perpetrators.
Highlighting the impact on schools, hospitals, and businesses, he called for greater public cooperation alongside government vigilance to protect critical infrastructure from sabotage and ensure stable power supply across Tripura.
