Agartala, May 12: Marking International Nurses Day, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday announced that the state government has initiated the recruitment process for 432 nursing professionals to enhance healthcare services across the state.
Speaking at a state-level event held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister, who also holds the Health portfolio, said that the recruitment drive includes 332 permanent nursing officers and an additional 100 contractual nursing staff, for which the Finance Department has already approved the necessary funding.
“In 2024 alone, 153 nursing staff have been recruited. We are now taking steps to appoint 332 more to meet the growing demand in healthcare. Moreover, funds have been sanctioned to bring in 100 contractual staff,” Dr. Saha said.
Emphasizing the vital role of nurses in the healthcare system, Dr. Saha said, “Nurses are the first line of care in hospitals. Before doctors arrive, it’s the nurses who monitor vital signs, administer medicines, and provide initial treatment. They are the lifeline and the trust of patients in critical moments.”
He noted that this year’s International Nurses Day theme promotes the attractiveness of the profession and underscores its economic impact. “A strong nursing workforce contributes to quality care and a robust healthcare economy,” he added.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the dedication of nurses, stating that despite often being outnumbered by patients, their selfless service ensures recovery and comfort for countless individuals.
“Many of our youths from Tripura are making their mark internationally in the nursing field, which speaks volumes about the potential of this profession,” he said.
Highlighting developments in nursing education, Dr. Saha mentioned that the Nursing Training Institute has been upgraded to the Agartala Government Nursing College, offering B.Sc Nursing alongside MBBS and BDS programs. Additionally, the ANM Nursing Institute in Udaipur has been upgraded to a GNM-level institute to expand training opportunities.
Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and senior health officials including Dr. Tapan Majumder, Dr. Anjan Das, and Dr. H. P. Sharma were present at the event, along with Tripura Nursing Council Registrar Rebecca Darlong.
