Agartala, May 12: In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics, the Churaibari Police in North Tripura achieved significant success by seizing nearly Rs 4 crore worth of dry cannabis during a routine checking operation on Monday afternoon.
According to Inspector Khokan Saha, Officer-in-Charge of Churaibari police station, around 2 PM on May 12, a six-wheeler truck bearing registration number UP58AT-1128, en route from Agartala to Guwahati, was intercepted at the Churaibari police naka point.
Upon inspection, it was noticed that the nuts on several electronic transformers being carried in the truck appeared unusually loose, raising suspicion.
Following a closer examination, the OC discovered that the transformers were being used to conceal packets of dry cannabis.
In total, 960 kilograms of cannabis, packed in 96 bundles of 10 kilograms each, were found hidden inside ten transformers. The estimated black-market value of the seized narcotics is between rupees 3.5 to 4 crore.
The truck driver, Awadhesh Kumar (42), and the co-driver, Pramod Kumar (59), both residents of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, were taken into custody.
A case under the NDPS Act is being registered against the duo, and further investigation is underway.
District Police Superintendent Avinash Rai, Sub-Divisional Police Officer B. Zorin Puiya, and DCM Genius Debbarma rushed to the spot upon learning about the seizure.
The cannabis packets were confiscated in the presence of the officials, and the accused are scheduled to be produced before the district court on Tuesday.
