Agartala, May 11:
In a shocking incident that raised questions over security arrangements in one of Agartala’s most protected zones, a group of thieves broke into the government quarter of a senior IAS officer in the Shyamali Bazaar area and fled with valuable items including an iPhone, iPad, branded wristwatches, and a collection of foreign coins.
The incident occurred on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, while the official—who holds the rank of secretary—was reportedly out of town for official training.
The theft from such a high-security locality has sparked concern among residents and officials alike.
However, swift action by the New Capital Complex (NCC) police led to a breakthrough within 48 hours.
A team led by Inspector Prajit Malakar arrested three suspects—Akash Rabi Das, Dipankar Banik, and Sudip Chakraborty—and recovered the stolen gadgets and accessories, including the high-end watches and electronic devices.
“All three accused will be produced before the court today,” said Inspector Malakar.
This is not the first time the Shyamali Bazaar area has witnessed such a breach. A few months ago, burglars targeted a CBI transit office nearby, making away with furniture, ceiling fans, geysers, doors, and even windows. Those items were later recovered and the accused were apprehended.
The repeated incidents have prompted calls for enhanced surveillance and stricter security measures in Agartala’s high-security zones.
