Agartala, May 11: CPI(M) general secretary Mariam Alexander Baby has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where victims were reportedly targeted based on religious identity, and demanded that Pakistan hand over those responsible for the killings.
Speaking to North East Live during his first visit to Tripura after assuming the party’s top post, Baby backed India’s actions against terror and lauded the country’s non-escalatory targeted strikes on militant hideouts along the border.
“India should continue to pressurize Pakistan to hand over the terrorists so they can face trial and punishment under Indian law,” he said.
While supporting strong action against terrorism, Baby reiterated CPI(M)’s stance that India and Pakistan must resolve their disputes through direct dialogue.
“Both countries are capable of handling bilateral issues and the future course of action will depend on the dialogue between the two nations,” he added.
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining India’s strategic autonomy and long-standing policy of non-interference.
On the political situation in Tripura, Baby launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government, accusing it of orchestrating violence against CPI(M) workers and suppressing the opposition.
“This is a systematic campaign of intimidation, but the people are increasingly disillusioned with BJP’s unfulfilled promises,” he said. “Despite the threats, CPI(M) is regaining public support.”
Baby was in Agartala to attend the CPI(M) Tripura State Committee meeting, held in the presence of senior leaders including Politburo member and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, and other central leadership.
