Agartala, May 8: In a significant arms recovery operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) jointly seized eight pistols and sixteen empty magazines from two unclaimed bags at Agartala railway station on Thursday.
The arms were discovered during a routine security check of the Tripura Sundari Express, which had arrived at Agartala station from Firozpur.
Assistant Commandant of RPF Agartala, B.K. Sinha, informed that the suspicious bags were spotted during inspection and were immediately examined in the presence of senior officials from GRP and RPF which led to the discovery of the arms.
Each bag reportedly contained four pistols and eight magazines, raising serious concerns over the potential trafficking of illegal arms through the railway route.
While no arrests have been made so far in connection with the seizure, authorities confirmed that past incidents suggest the involvement of arms smugglers using Agartala railway station as a transit point.
A few months ago, two individuals were arrested in separate cases involving arms smuggling through the region. Both had allegedly procured weapons from Nagaland and were intending to smuggle them across the international border.
Following the seizure, senior officials from the railway police and state intelligence visited the spot and inspected the recovered items.
A detailed investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those involved in the smuggling network.
