Agartala, May 6: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday asserted that the state government is working relentlessly to transform Tripura into a global tourism destination by developing world-class infrastructure across key tourist sites, with a special focus on boosting the rural economy.
Addressing a gathering in Amarpur Sub-Division after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for multiple development projects in Gomati district, the Chief Minister said the government is committed to showcasing Tripura’s natural beauty and rich heritage to the world.
“The government is now focused on developing infrastructure to attract tourists from across the globe. At the same time, our aim is to improve the rural economy by creating livelihood opportunities through tourism,” Dr. Saha said.
He urged local residents to also explore and visit various tourism destinations in the state to strengthen the internal tourism economy. “Tourism not only brings development but also helps in connecting communities. I appeal to the people of Tripura to take pride in our state’s beauty and be part of this growth journey,” he added.
The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s achievements, noting Tripura’s position as second in GDP in the Northeast after Assam and second in per capita income after Sikkim.
Highlighting a major initiative, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a Rs 67.76 crore tourism infrastructure project at Chabimura—known as the ‘Amazon of Northeast India’.
Funded by the Asian Development Bank, the project will include eco-cottages, an open-air theater, a multi-cuisine restaurant, picnic spots, and other modern amenities. Amar Sagar and Fatik Sagar in Amarpur will also be developed under this initiative.
Saha also inaugurated the newly renovated Sagarika Tourist Lodge and inspected various ongoing tourism projects in the area.
Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, present at the event, said, “We are implementing multiple projects with support from the Central government to make Tripura a world-class destination within the next two years. Over seven lakh tourists visited the state last year, and we are targeting significant growth.”
Chowdhury announced plans for a Rs 50 crore eco-park at Jirania, inspired by Kolkata’s Nicco Park, and revealed that the government is exploring seaplane tourism to connect remote aquatic destinations.
The event was attended by local MLA Ranjit Das, Secretary Tourism UK Chakma, Director Tourism Prashant Badal Negi, and senior officials including the DM and SP of Gomati district.
