Agartala, April 29: Tripura Pradesh Congress, along with its frontal organizations, launched the ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ (Save Constitution) movement in Agartala on Tuesday as part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the alleged erosion of democratic principles under the BJP-led central government.
The protest began from the Agartala Press Club area, where Congress leaders and supporters gathered in large numbers, holding placards, copies of the Constitution, Indian tricolour, Congress party flags and shouting slogans in defence of constitutional values.
The rally was aimed at highlighting what the party called a “systematic misuse” of central agencies such as the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to harass Opposition leaders across the country.
As the rally proceeded toward the Income Tax department office, it was intercepted by security forces.
A brief skirmish occurred when some protesters attempted to break through the police barricades. However, the situation was brought under control swiftly by the authorities.
Addressing the gathering, senior Congress leaders accused the BJP of changing the secular fabric of the nation and undermining democratic institutions and turning central agencies into tools of political vendetta.
The Congress leaders viewed that the campaign is not just about the Congress party—it’s about saving the very spirit of the Constitution that BJP wants to change.
The Tripura Congress has vowed to continue such democratic movements to “safeguard the rights of citizens and uphold constitutional values.”
