Agartala, April 29: In a major success based on a tip-off, police from the Jatrapur Police Station in Sepahijala district of Tripura detained three Bangladeshi nationals along with two plastic drums filled with dry cannabis from the house of of one Jakir Hossain in bordering Baidyanath village under Dhanpur Panchayat.
The raid, which continued till late Monday night, was carried out by a team of police officers led by Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Subrata Debnath, along with TSR personnel.
The operation was launched following confidential information regarding illegal drug activity by few Bangladeshi drug traffickers in the area.
According to police, while the three Bangladeshi nationals were caught red-handed with the cannabis, the house owner Jakir Hossain managed to flee from an adjacent room upon sensing the police’s arrival.
Speaking to the media OC Subrata Debnath said, “After receiving the information post 11 PM, I led the operation with my team and TSR jawans. We successfully detained three individuals from the house with cannabis in their possession.”
Police has registered a case under NDPS Act and IPP Act against the arrested individuals and the house owner.
The detainees—Mainul Islam, Taizul Islam, and Zahirullah—are all residents of Barisal district in Bangladesh. During interrogation, they confessed to crossing the border several days ago and taking shelter in the village, where they had been collecting and storing dry cannabis.
“In the current national and international security scenario, the fact that individuals are sneaking in from Bangladesh and establishing hideouts here is a serious concern,” Debnath remarked.
He added that joint patrolling with the Border Security Force (BSF), local police, and TSR is ongoing in the border areas, and surveillance has been intensified across the entire police station jurisdiction.
