Agartala, April 25: Tipra Motha supremo and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma on Friday expressed strong support for the Indian government’s tough stance against Pakistan following the recent terror incident in Pahalgam, while urging a similar approach towards Bangladesh for allegedly promoting fundamentalist politics that target Hindu minorities.
“Bangladesh and Pakistan will try to surround India — one from the west and one from the east,” Debbarma cautioned, adding, “I completely support the Indian government’s reaction to the horrific Pahalgam incident. But I believe similar firmness should be shown when such things happen in the East.”
Highlighting the strategic vulnerability of eastern India, he remarked, “Delhi is close to Pakistan but that doesn’t make us less Indian. We love our country and we want the government to be equally strong with Bangladesh, especially considering the statements made by Mohammad Yunus.”
He warned of increasing threats from neighboring countries, claiming that the Chinese are building an airbase near North Bengal and that Pakistani ISI generals had visited Bangladesh just a month ago.
Pradyot further alleged that Tripura is the Indian state most affected by the rise of religious fundamentalism in Bangladesh.
He pointed to historic communal violence in places like Noakhali, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, and Brahmanbaria — once part of undivided Tripura — to assert that Bangladesh could never be a reliable friend of India.
“Today, the land disputes between tribal and non-tribal communities in Tripura stem from the migration of Hindus who were forced to flee East Pakistan due to fundamentalist violence,” he added.
