Agartala: April 17: A deeply disturbing case has come to light in Tripura, where a man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and attempting to sell his three-month-old daughter. The accused, Gautam Ghosh, a resident of Khayerpur Daspara and son of Pran Gopal Ghosh, was taken into custody by the police on Thursday following reports of the incident published across various media platforms.
According to reports, Gautam Ghosh got married a year ago and recently became a father to a baby girl. However, he was reportedly displeased with the birth of a daughter and began pressuring his wife to sell the child. When she refused, he allegedly assaulted the infant. On the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, fearing for her daughter’s safety, the mother fled the house with the baby.
Members of the Youth Prerna Social Organization found the mother and child and offered them shelter. On Wednesday, the organization reported the matter to Bodhjungnagar police station, and by Thursday morning, with their help, Gautam Ghosh was arrested from his residence.
In response, officials from the State Child Protection and Rights Commission and the District Child Protection Unit visited a private shelter home in Radha Nagar, Agartala, where the mother and baby are currently staying. The officials assessed the child’s physical condition and assured proper care. According to the Commission, both mother and child will be transferred to a government shelter on Friday to ensure their safety and well-being.
During questioning by the social organization, Gautam Ghosh reportedly admitted to his actions. The incident has sparked outrage and drawn attention to issues of gender-based violence and child protection in the state. Authorities have assured that legal action will follow and necessary support will be provided to the victims.
