Agartala: April 13: The Tripura State Committee of CPI(ML) held a press conference at the Agartala Press Club today, led by State Secretary Partha Karmakar and senior party leaders. The party strongly condemned the central and state governments’ “anti-people” policies, addressing key issues such as rising fuel prices, the Wakf Act (Amendment)-2025, labor rights, and declining law and order.
Karmakar criticized the Wakf Act (Amendment)-2025, calling it an attack on the religious freedom of the Muslim community. He argued that the amendment violates constitutional provisions including Articles 14, 26, 29, and 30 by enabling state control over religious institutions. He warned that the amendment not only targets Muslims but also threatens the secular foundation of the Constitution.
The CPI(ML) also raised concerns over the ₹50 hike in cooking gas prices. Under the Ujjwala scheme, a cylinder now costs ₹550, while regular consumers pay ₹853. With petrol and diesel prices also up by ₹2 per litre, Karmakar said the hikes disproportionately affect the working class, which already faces unemployment, low wages, and lack of government job openings.
He condemned unparliamentary remarks made against opposition legislators during the recent Assembly session and demanded an apology from the Parliamentary Minister, calling for their dismissal if they fail to do so.
The party alleged rampant corruption in government departments and criticized the exploitation of citizens by land mafias. Additionally, it slammed the Modi government for not opposing the Trump administration’s 26% tariff on Indian exports, claiming it harmed the economy.
CPI(ML) demanded that May 1 be declared a public holiday in Tripura and announced full support for the May 20 nationwide strike. The party will hold statewide campaigns and called on other trade unions, including INTUC, to join the movement for workers’ rights and democracy.
