Agartala, April 10: Hundreds of Muslims staged a protest on Thursday afternoon in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar, opposing the Waqf Amendment Act and demanding its immediate revocation.
Organized under the banner of ‘Dharmanagar Uttaranchilio Kendrio O Ancholik Joutho Porogona Committee’, the demonstration took place at Premtala Bazaar, near the Assam-Tripura border.
Protesters, many wearing black ribbons as a mark of dissent, denounced the Act as a “Black Law,” claiming it violates constitutional guarantees provided to minority communities.
Raising slogans against the central government’s move, the protesters asserted that the amendment undermines the rights of Muslims and sought its rollback.
Several organizations, including All India Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, supported the protest.
A demonstrator claimed that even members of the Hindu community joined the protest to uphold secularism and safeguard the Constitution.
“This is not just about one community. Hindus and Muslims are standing together to protect the secular fabric of our country,” said one protester.
Meantime, several other Muslim organization have also announced to demonstrate protest against the Waqf Amendment Act and urged secular democratic people from other religions to join the protest.
