Agartala, March 30 – In a swift and successful operation, East Agartala police have recovered stolen gold jewellery worth over Rs 50 lakh and apprehended four members of a jewellery theft gang, including a woman, within four days of the crime, a senior police official said on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference, Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura district, Dr. Kiran Kumar, detailed the incident. The theft occurred on the night of March 25 at the residence of Narayan Chandra Paul in the Shibnagar area of Agartala, where burglars fled with a substantial haul of gold jewellery, silver coins, and cash.
Following the theft, a dedicated police team was formed under the leadership of SDPO Sadar sub-division Deba Prasad Roy and OC East Agartala police station Rana Chatterjee. Their meticulous investigation led to the swift identification and arrest of the culprits.
The key accused, Akash Dey, who had recently been released from jail, was apprehended from Bishramganj in Sepahijala district. His accomplices—Sayan Sarkar, Krisha Nama, and Lipi Begam—were arrested from different locations in Agartala, including Battala, Rajnagar, and Usha Bazaar.
During the operation, the police recovered approximately 324 grams of gold, valued at around Rs 50 lakh, along with Rs 40,000 in cash.
Authorities continue to interrogate the suspects to locate the remaining stolen items, including silver coins and chains.
The prompt action and successful recovery have strengthened public confidence in the police force, showcasing their efficiency and commitment to maintaining law and order in Agartala.
